More than 100,000 lights go up on the bald cypress trees along the San Antonio River Walk every holiday season, and the 45th annual Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony turns them on Friday, November 27, 2026. Here is how the season works, what it costs, and how locals do it without the crowds.
The number that starts the season
More than 100,000 lights, about 2,250 strings of them, are draped over the towering bald cypress trees lining the San Antonio River Walk each holiday season, and the official River Walk page puts the count even higher at 200,000 lights. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
The lights are free to view, shine nightly from dusk until dawn, and stay up from the night of the lighting ceremony through early January. That is a six-week window of free holiday scenery in the middle of downtown.
The night the lights come on
The 45th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony takes place Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving, with the parade stepping off from the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts at 6 p.m. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
The 2026 theme is 'Holiday Wishes Come True,' and the Witte Museum, celebrating its 100th anniversary, serves as Grand Marshal. foxsanantonio.com
The illuminated floats do the official turning-on of the holiday lights, so the parade is both the season's kickoff and the moment downtown glows.
What it costs
The lights themselves are free, but the parade is ticketed, with past years' tickets starting around $15 and up. visitsanantonio.com
If a ticketed parade is not the family's speed, the free version is simple: walk the River Walk on any evening after the lighting ceremony and the whole downtown loop is the show.
How locals do it
A few habits keep the season magical without the crowds:
- Go on a weeknight after the first weekend: the lights stay up through early January, and the crowds thin out fast after the parade weekend.
- Walk the stretch between the Tobin Center and the Arneson River Theatre, where the cypress canopy is densest and the reflections are best.
- Bundle the visit with dinner downtown and a river barge ride if the kids want the water view.
- Arrive early for the parade if you are going: riverbank viewing fills quickly, and the 6 p.m. step-off means an early dinner or a late one.
A holiday season worth planning around
For newcomers, the holiday River Walk is one of those moments the city does better than almost anywhere else, and it is free. It is also a good excuse to see downtown at its best before you decide where to land.
