Muertos Fest returns to Hemisfair October 23 through 25, 2026, free to attend, with 80+ community-built altars and an estimated 135,000+ visitors each year. Here is what newcomers should know before they go.
What Muertos Fest is
Muertos Fest is San Antonio's official Dia de los Muertos celebration, held at Hemisfair Park in downtown. It started in 2013 as a small altar exhibition and has grown into a free, multi-day festival that National Geographic once named one of its '7 Best Fall Festivals in the USA,' per the festival's official site.
The heart of it is the ofrendas: 80+ community-built altars, the largest open altar exhibition in San Antonio. Around them you will find an artisan market called Muertos Mercado, live music and dance on multiple stages, poetry, processions, and family workshops.
The 2026 dates, all free
The 2026 edition runs Friday, October 23, through Sunday, October 25, at Hemisfair, and it is free to attend. The weekend opens with 'Presente!', an opening-night tribute, and the nonprofit partner for 2026 is Letras en la Frontera, per KSAT's 2026 preview.
Crowd size, honestly
The festival's official site says it welcomes 135,000+ attendees, and organizers told KSAT the 2024 edition drew an estimated 130,000 people. Either way, this is one of the biggest free events on San Antonio's calendar, so expect lines for food and the space near the main stages to fill up fast.
How newcomers should plan
Downtown parking fills early on festival weekends. Ride sharing and VIA buses drop you right at the edge of Hemisfair, and the park is a short walk from the River Walk and the Alamo, so a hotel downtown means you can skip the car entirely.
For families, afternoons tend to be lighter than evenings. Many families aim for Saturday afternoon altars and workshops, then stay into the evening for the music.
Why this matters if you are moving to San Antonio
Muertos Fest is a free, family-friendly doorway into San Antonio's heritage, and it happens in the same downtown core newcomers are already exploring. It is the kind of event that makes a new city feel like home fast, with no admission cost and the city's culture on full display.
