Meals on Wheels San Antonio volunteers and staff visit more than 4,000 clients' homes every weekday and deliver roughly 318,000 home-delivered meals a year, with more than 30 million meals served since 1977. Here is how the program works and how neighbors plug in.
The program by the numbers
Meals on Wheels San Antonio volunteers and staff visit more than 4,000 clients' homes every weekday across Bexar and surrounding counties, delivering roughly 318,000 home-delivered meals a year. A separate city contract adds about 700,000 meals a year, up to 2,700 a day, served to adults 60 and older at San Antonio senior centers.
The organization was founded in 1977 and has delivered more than 30 million meals since then, per the San Antonio Express-News.
It is more than a meal
The delivery is the point, and so is the knock on the door. For many clients, the volunteer who arrives around midday is the only person they see that day, which is why the program treats the visit as part of the service: a meal, a friendly face, and a quick check that everything is okay.
Who it serves and how to get meals
Home-delivered meals go to older adults and people with disabilities who are homebound, unable to cook for themselves, or unable to drive, across Bexar and surrounding counties. There are no strict income qualifications for the core program.
To start the process, call 210-735-5115 and ask for Client Services, or submit a referral through mowsatx.org/referral. The senior center meal program is a separate, lighter-touch option for adults 60 and older who can get out to a center.
How to volunteer
Delivery volunteers pick up meals at sites across the city and run routes Monday through Friday around midday, typically 11 a.m. to noon. You apply through the volunteer portal, complete a short orientation, and consent to background checks before your first route.
Routes are flexible, and the program is built for working schedules: some volunteers deliver one day a week, some a few days. If you have an hour at lunch, that is enough to make a real difference.
Why it matters for newcomers
For families moving parents to San Antonio, Meals on Wheels is one of the first resources worth knowing, because it is free, local, and already woven into the community. For everyone else, it is the easiest way to meet your new city one doorstep at a time.
