Boerne celebrates Oktoberfest as a season, not a single weekend: brewery events through October and the 6th annual Barktoberfest on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Main Plaza, all with free admission. Here is the local's guide to the month.
Oktoberfest, Boerne style
Boerne does not hold one giant Oktoberfest. Instead, the town spreads the celebration across a season from late September through October, with German-inspired food, seasonal Märzen-style lagers, live music, and family games at venues across the Hill Country Mile and beyond, per the City of Boerne.
The honest headline: admission to Boerne's Oktoberfest celebrations is free. You pay only for the food, the drinks, and the activities you actually do.
Barktoberfest, by the numbers
The family anchor of the season is the 6th annual Barktoberfest, Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Boerne Main Plaza, hosted by the Hill Country Animal League. It is an Oktoberfest-inspired, dog-friendly festival with a doggy dash, a dog costume contest, local beer vendors, live music, food trucks, a petting zoo, and pet adoptions, and admission is free.
If you have a dog, this is the one. If you do not, it is still a great Saturday on Main Plaza, and the adoptions tent is a genuinely dangerous place to browse.
The brewery circuit
The season's beer events live at Boerne's breweries and taprooms. Free Roam Brewing Co. on South Main Street hosts a two-day Oktoberfest with live music, food trucks, vendors, and a sanctioned stein-holding competition, with no admission fee, and other spots around town pour Märzen-style Oktoberfest lagers and run German-themed menus through the month.
The lineup shifts year to year, so the honest advice is to check The Boerne Life's Oktoberfest roundup or the city's event calendar before you pick a weekend.
Make a weekend of it
An Oktoberfest weekend is a good excuse to do Boerne properly: brunch on the Hill Country Mile, an afternoon at the Cibolo Nature Center with the kids, and an evening of music and steins at the festival.
October is also one of the prettiest months in the Hill Country, so the drive in is part of the event.
Why it matters for newcomers
Oktoberfest season is small-town community life in one month: free events, neighbors out with their dogs, and a town square doing what it was built for. It is a great way for newcomers to meet people without spending a dime on admission.
Go see for yourself
If you are new to Boerne or just visiting, put Barktoberfest on the calendar and walk Main Plaza with a coffee. And if the town square makes you wonder what living here would be like, that is the conversation I love to have. Call or text 210-744-5478 or use the contact page. No pressure.
