On Niche's 2026 rankings, Alamo Heights ISD tops the San Antonio area list with an A+, while the two districts most relocating families land in, North East ISD and Northside ISD, grade out at A and B+. Here is how to read the list honestly.
The headline: who tops the 2026 list
Niche's 2026 ranking of school districts in the San Antonio area puts Alamo Heights ISD at No. 1 with an A+ overall grade and a 4.26-out-of-5 rating, with Randolph Field ISD close behind at No. 2. 2026 Best School Districts in the San Antonio Area, Niche
The two districts where relocating families actually land sit a little further down the same list: North East ISD at No. 7 with an A, and Northside ISD at No. 12 with a B+. That shape, a few small elite districts and two enormous A-level systems, is the real geography of school choice in San Antonio.
North East ISD: the big A
North East ISD is one of the city's largest districts and, on the 2026 Niche list, one of the best rated. It holds an overall A, 4.19 out of 5 from about 548 reviews, and ranks No. 7 of 38 districts in the San Antonio area, plus No. 12 of 39 for districts with the best teachers. North East Independent School District profile, Niche
It covers a big slice of the northeast side of the city, where a lot of relocating families land, so its rating matters to more households than almost any other district in the metro.
One honest note: a district this size is really a collection of campuses, and the district grade is only a starting point. Two NEISD elementaries can feel different even a few miles apart, which is why the next step is the attendance zone, not just the letter grade.
Northside ISD: balance at scale
Northside ISD is the other giant, serving much of the northwest side including Stone Oak. It earns a B+ overall, 4.17 out of 5 from roughly 1,135 reviews, and ranks No. 12 of 38 in the area. Its category grades tell a fuller story: Academics B, Diversity A-, Teachers B+, College Prep A-, Sports A-, Clubs and Activities B, Administration B, Food C, and Resources and Facilities C. Northside Independent School District profile, Niche
That mix, strong in academics, diversity, and college prep with weaker scores in food and facilities resources, is typical of a huge district: the average hides real variation between campuses, and that variation is where your family's fit lives.
Alamo Heights ISD: the small-school outlier
Alamo Heights ISD is the undisputed No. 1 in the San Antonio area on Niche's 2026 list, an A+ district that also cracks the Texas top 20. The catch is scale: it serves a compact, high-priced set of communities, and the homes in its attendance zones carry a premium to match. The full picture, including what the neighborhood costs, is in my Alamo Heights guide.
Ratings also disagree across systems, and that is worth knowing. Niche grades Alamo Heights ISD an A+, while the Texas Education Agency's most recent rating for the district is an overall B with an A in Student Achievement, the component most parents weigh first. Both can be true at once because they measure different things, and that single example is the best lesson for the whole list below.
How to read any rating honestly
No rating system is the whole story, and using two or three of them side by side is the honest way to build a school list. Whichever source you read first, put every grade through the same four checks:
- Ratings are snapshots with different lenses: Niche blends test scores, reviews, and outcomes its own way, the TEA rates against Texas standards, and no single number captures a school year.
- District grades hide campus differences, especially at NEISD and Northside scale, so look up the specific schools in your attendance zone and compare those.
- Feeder patterns matter more than a single grade: an excellent elementary can feed into a crowded middle school, and the whole chain is what your kids will actually travel.
- Ratings are not visits. A campus tour and a conversation with a principal tell you things no letter grade can.
What this means for your shortlist
Use the list to build a shortlist, not to close the book. If top Niche grades are the priority and the budget follows, Alamo Heights belongs on the list. If you want an A-rated system at a more attainable price point, NEISD deserves a real look, and on the northwest side, Northside ISD's best individual campuses are worth touring even though the district letter is a B+.
And if a specific district is non-negotiable for your family, every relocation conversation should start there, because it determines which neighborhoods are even on the table.
